Odisha Plans PV Projects in 198 Villages

The Indian state of Odisha plans to set up solar energy projects in 198 villages as part of India’s rural electrification programme.

The Odisha Renewable Energy Development Agency (OREDA) has invited tenders from PV system suppliers and manufacturers to install, supply, commission or maintain solar PV power plants in the 198 selected villages in Odisha.

The tenders will include fitting street light systems, indoor wiring and fitting home lighting systems.India's ongoing rural electrification programme now has a live app showing how many villages are being electrified on a daily basis.

Energy minister PiyushGoyal and prime minister NarendraModi made it a priority to bring power to all the remaining 18,452 villages without electricity within 1,000 days of independence day in India (15 August). Goyal recently said his officials are now planning to achieve this target within 720 days instead.

Industries told to go in for Rooftop Solar Power Generation in Karnataka

The Indian state of Odisha plans to set up solar energy projects in 198 villages as part of India’s rural electrification programme.

Industries, especially small and medium enterprises here, are being wooed to harness solar energy and become self-sufficient in their energy needs.

With the demand for energy going up substantially, tapping solar power seems to be the way out. One such option is rooftop solar power generation. The unutilised terrace space of the industrial buildings can be used to install photovoltaic units for producing solar power.

“Solar power can be generated from rooftop systems at a nominal rate of Rs.6.50/kWh. This works out much cheaper than the power generated through diesel generator sets,” Mysore Industries Association general secretary Suresh Kumar Jain stated in a release.

Mr. Jain said the Union government has set a target of installing 4,200 MW of grid-interactive rooftop solar PV plants in the next five years (up to 2019-20)under the National Solar Mission (NSM). This will be possible if industries also contribute and take up the challenge, he said.

In order to spread the message and encourage more people to start harnessing solar power, an awareness programme on rooftop solar power generation will be organised for industrialists at the KIADB Complex on K.R.S. Road here at 10.30 a.m on Monday.

LaghuUdyogBharati — National Industrial Organisation, Mysore Industries Association representing the industries of Mysuru, Mandya and Chamarajanagar districts, in association with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Ltd. (KREDL), Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation and District Industries Centre, Mysuru, are together organising the programme.

Vidya Rani, assistant general manager, KREDL, Bengaluru, and D.K. Dinesh Kumar, project engineer, KREDL, Mysuru, will talk on rooftop solar power policies, technologies and economics, grid connection, net metering, financing and other related subjects.

Indian Railways to Tender 150 MW Solar

India’s ministry of railways has issued tender documents for 50MW of rooftop solar plants with another 100MW in the pipeline.

Presenting the Railway Budget 2016-17 in Parliament, minister of railways Suresh PrabhakarPrabhu, said the ministry plans to install 1GW of solar in the next five years in order to help achieve the Central government’s overall 100GW by 2022 solar target.

Prabhu also said the ministry will be installing solar micro-grids at remote railway stations, starting with some pilot projects. Energy from these micro-grids will supply power to both railway stations and surrounding rural households.

Prabhu added: “We have commissioned a 25MW wind mill power plant at Jaisalmer and Indian Railways are working towards commissioning 132.5MW in the next year.”
